Audio 1, formerly known as Digital Audio Workstation Basics, is a first semester introductory course designed to provide students with a comprehensive understanding of the fundamentals and basic workflow in the DAW Reaper, sound design, audio processing, and basic setups for audio effects. This one-semester course runs for 12 weeks and is ideal introductory course for students interested in pursuing a career in audio engineering or sound design.


The course covers a range of topics, including audio project management, track-laying, simple recording techniques, and the game industry audio pipeline.

Through lab classes, students will receive hands-on instruction on these topics and gain practical experience working with the DAW Reaper.

 

Course contents and learning material:

 

The course material for Digital Audio Workstation Fundamentals is provided via an online learning platform, which includes a range of resources such as video tutorials, reading materials, and sample projects. Students will have access to a range of tools and software necessary for completing the course, including audio editing software, audio effects plugins, and sample libraries.

 

Evaluation and assignments:

 

Evaluation for the course consists of intermediary tasks and a final assignment and presentation. These assessments are designed to evaluate students' understanding of the course material and their ability to apply the concepts and principles covered in class. Throughout the course, students will work on a range of video and audio projects, developing their skills and techniques in sound design, audio processing, and audio project management.

Tools:

 

The main software for this course is Cockos Reaper. In terms of hardware, a simple audio interface and pair of over-ear headphones are used. The former is provided by the school.
